Today teens are going through a lot of confusion from increasing pressure of parents to the latest in fashion. Bangalore Mirror takes an exclusive peak at the teens at Bangalore.
Assignment deadlines. Mothers endless nagging with teachers. Teachers comparing each student. My head is going to explode. This stress adds up. Patience with themselves or ability to control their lives expires. It is time to drown myself. This is what goes on inside a suicidal teen. “It is quite childish. Kids are just afraid of facing the truth.” ,says father of two. Psychology defines it otherwise, it is called upper limit, according to psychology lecturer of Surana College. “This limit makes people vulnerable only to a certain amount of pressure”. “What happens then differs on how the person is able to bear with the pain of killing themselves.” Parents are at most times at fault. Due to stereotypical behavior they over-assert themselves.
Prof. Vishwanath a professor for psychiatry from Ambedkar Medical College added, “there are both biological and environmental factors which cause something as drastic as death itself”. He then shows Bangalore Mirror,”This environment is basically formed from demands of life. Adolescents basically, are mixed up. They at most times are treated as children. Then on the other hand because of their size they land up with too much responsibility. Its confusing and at the same time they feel derogated if they are not treated with enough respect.”
Curiosity took the better and then how do psychiatrists tackle with these confused cases were asked. Professor put some light and said, “Psychologists are the foundation for a person(adolescent or adult or children) to start exploring their issues. It helps when they talk as their emotions are bottled up, it comes out freeing them.” On how his experience had been he mentions, “mostly patients when depressed feel good while someone talks to them. They open up by continuously talking. And then we proceed with the other procedures involved like prescribing the right medication...”
A few college students were interviewed on this issue. So that the actual thing is understood first hand.
“Whats worse is their are too many double standards. Mom tells me not too watch movies which depict sex. But sensor board shows otherwise,”says Rahul (name changed).Whats more is that suicide rates are sky high. Rahul faces problems at home in college. He has economic problems coupled with depression. He moreover fears visiting a psychiatrist as he associates it to being called crazy.
The 18 year old later told us he is economically deprived at times and feels insecure. He is prone to even suicide. There are a lot of other teens who associate with Rahul.
WHATS WRONG WITH INDIA? not that all parents are like his. But there is a bigger problem children in schools face. Where wrongly inhibited is painful experiences are received instead of useful facts. And danger to how they as a group are being targeted.
Suicidal facts according to the commissioner of police, Bangalore:
year (year compiled in)on the whole(including boys and girls) - suicides committed
2003 1470
2004 1528
2006 2008
2007 2430
2008 1444(upto 31-07-2008)
On Teachers when the subject was being discussed, showed by a few teenagers(a group of students their identity on request being kept anonymous). Some had threats regarding their internal marks making their stress virtually unbearable. It gets worse in hostels, due to lack of communication trust suicides are at a high.
Others spoke about usage of - open insulting and also never ending imposition’s. According to Dr Ali Kwaja, founder of Banjara Academy, “These issues especially in the childhood come out during their adolescence as symptoms.” These Symptoms may include depression, alcohol usage, smoking, taking drugs, etc...
When asked how measures need to be applied. He told Bangalore Mirror, “Whenever a student encounters such problems, he needs to insulate him/herself. He needs to keep telling that it is the teacher or parent’s problem and nothing is wrong with her or him.”
Smoking or other substance abuse is due to such problems. To combat it, the substance abuser needs to ask herself why she is depressed. Talking to others about their problems is another way of dealing with esteem issues. Moreover he said that the suicide rates are increasing and we need to plan our next move carefully.
“What adds to everything is that Bangalore has one of the largest problems, especially with the Metro Rail coming up. This makes the pain all the more worse. So getting a college near by or shifting near would be a good idea,” Says Sayesh S an engineering student.
Through a candid interview a teacher (name not mentioned) added, “A teacher has many classes. Some lead to deep routed problems. Therefore it is essential for students to understand such problems and bend their backs as students are but depended.”
The most important thing is for teens to get their priorities right They need to form an identity. They need to work on their looks, resume(hobbies, academics, etc) by setting goals and working toward them passionately.
